statement by the European Parliament negotiating team and the Italian Presidency of the Council with regards to the trade marks package

During the autumn of 2014 all three Institutions of the European Union have been working very hard to achieve without any undue delays an adoption of the Trade Marks package.

Despite the broad consensus on many aspects of the proposal the parties have considered that some additional time is needed in order to be able to arrive at a final conclusion on all essential elements of the package. Thus the co-legislators have decided jointly to postpone the final trilogue scheduled originally for December 16. The new date of this trilogue will be communicated shortly. This will also enable the co-legislators to ensure that the drafting of the final proposal is of the highest possible quality.

An agreement has already been reached on many issues, including notably the treatment of goods in transit and small consignments.

The negotiating team of the European Parliament would like to express its sincere appreciation to the Italian presidency for the remarkable progress that has been achieved in such short time on a technically complex dossier. The negotiating team considers that the compromise proposals put forward by Coreper constitute a very good foundation for reaching a final and complete agreement on the package in the first months of the next year. This would not have been possible without the considerable efforts of the Italian presidency.

The Presidency of the Council would like to thank the negotiating team of the European Parliament for its active commitment and cooperation on this complex proposal and to express its gratitude to the delegations in the Council for their constructive support in view of a final agreement by the two co-legislators.

On behalf of the negotiating team of the European Parliament
